Reserve Christian advanced to the quarterfinals of the CYO Basketball Classic by defeating St. Paul’s in the first round, 63-52 on Wednesday night at Rummel.

Chris Roussell led the Eagles with 17 points. Kyle McClue scored 14, and Lucas Martin scored 10.

RCS led 21-12 after the first quarter, and maintained its lead throughout.

“We jumped on them early and made our shots,” said Reserve Christian Coach Timmy Byrd. “But we were able to really limit their top players and stop them from running their stuff on offense.

One of the keys to the game was the defensive play of Martin, an eighth grader, who has been getting more playing time as of late. On Wednesday, Martin defended St. Paul’s leading scorer Justin Rake for much of the night, limiting him to 16 points.

“He did a really good job on Rake,” said Byrd. “He’s earning more and more time on the court for us.”

Tommy Bennett scored 10 for St. Paul’s.
