DESTREHAN-The Wildcats of Destrehan continued to do what they have been doing best all seasonŠ winning. The Wildcats defeated the Carencro Golden Bears in a 5A regional showdown Friday night 42-14.
The Golden Bears did manage to put up 14 points, but both touchdowns came in the fourth quarter after Destrehan Head Coach Steven Robicheaux had already decided to pull his starting defense to rest them for next week.
Destrehan quarterback Jordan Jefferson showcased his Baton Rouge-bound arm connecting on 9-of-12 for 234 yards and three touchdowns all in the first half.
“I think LSU is getting a good quarterback. He played lights out,” said Coach Robicheaux about Jefferson. “That’s what we needed.”
On Destrehan’s second score of the night, Jefferson pumped faked, then launched up a tight-spiraled, 59-yard bomb to a wide open Tim Molton. Molton had shook his defender like a pair of hot dice on the pump fake before catching the ball in-stride down the far sideline and waltzed into the endzone 13-0. Molton had three catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
With nine minutes left to play in the half, Jefferson dropped back to pass again. Jefferson found Brandon Armstrong on the near sideline. Armstrong slipped the first two tacklers and broke for the endzone. He was tripped up two yards shy of a touchdown, but that 38-yard reception set up Joel Banks for his first touchdown run on the night to put the Wildcats up 20-0.
The Wildcat defense shutdown Carencro’s only glimpse of hope, running back Alonzo Landry. Although Landry picked up 126 yards on 22 touches he never reached the endzone.
“Darrington Sentimore, Calvin Ursin and Brice Scott did a heck of a job all night long just controlling the offensive line… I thought our defensive line played tremendously,” said Coach Robicheaux. “My hat’s off to those guys. Let me tell you, Alonzo Landry’s a heck of a back and I thought we contained him pretty good tonight.”
After Destrehan shut down the option play, the Golden Bears didn’t have anywhere else to go. Quarterback Ricky Johnson completed more passes to the Wildcat defense than he did to his own team throwing two interceptions and only one completion. That one completion however was for a touchdown.
Johnson’s touchdown pass was not the prettiest thing in the world. The ball floated end-over-end, wobbling into a crowd of players camped out in the endzone. Carencro wide receiver Robert Wiltz leapt above the Wildcat defenders and came down with a touchdown catch with 1:17 left in the game.
That would be the last score of Carencro’s 2007 season. But the Destrehan Wildcats will be taking on St. Paul next week as prep-play nears the Superdome.
