West St. John wrapped up the District 9-1A title Thursday night, defeating Ascension Catholic on the road, 36-8.
Blake Comminie scored his fifth defensive touchdown of the year, a 75-yard fumble return to help wrap the contest up for the Rams. West St. John led 36-0 at halftime, then subbed in most of its backups.
“We lost the district title last year (to St. John), this year one of our goals was to get it back,” said West St. John coach Laury Dupont. “Now, the goal is to go as deep into the playoffs as we can. I am very pleased with the win.”
Kenneth Dabney ran nine times for 62 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Lewis ran six times for 33 yards and a score. Jesse Silas caught a 13-yard touchdown pass, and rushed for two touchdowns. Comminie also ran for a 1-yard touchdown.
“We were able to put them away in the first half. We played well in every aspect,” Dupont said.
West St. John (5-5, 4-0) fought back from a 0-5 start to the year to even its record and become the thirteenth seed in class 1A. The Rams will host their bi-district opener against No. 20 Acadiana Prep on Friday night.
“We played a tough slate of pre-district games, but those have made us tougher,” said Dupont. “Everyone would love to go undefeated and win every Friday night, but playing tough teams makes you better in the long run.”
