Hahnville took St. Amant’s best shot early on Friday night. Then, it shook it off and did what it’s done all season long.
St. Amant took leads of 13-6 and 20-13 in the first half. But Hahnville scored 37 unanswered points to come away with a 50-20 victory.
“We expected them to play hard, especially early on,” said Hahnville Coach Lou Valdin. “They were playing for their own playoff lives.
“They punched us in the mouth, and it was back and forth.”
Hahnville quarterback B.J. Young fired four touchdown passes in the game, giving him 26 for the season. That ties him with Tiger alum, Nick Cannon for the most touchdown passes in school history. Young was 12-for-20 for 195 yards in the game.
LaRon Byrd caught seven passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Greg Julien rushed 14 times for 65 yards and a score.
A Young 1-yard rushing touchdown tied the game at 13 in the second quarter, but St. Amant took the lead back at 20-13 after a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Charles West.
But Young found Byrd for a score for the second time in the game, an 11-yard touchdown that tied the game at 20.
Hahnville took its first lead when after Young found running back Lauren White for a 10-yard touchdown. The Tigers led 27-20 at halftime.
Hahnville coasted in the second half. Young found Byrd for his third touchdown reception, a 10-yard score to make it 34-20. Greg Julien found the endzone for a six yard touchdown, and Hahnville recorded a safety. It led 43-20 after three quarters.
Reggie Johnson capped off the scoring for Hahnville with a 90-yard fumble recovery for a score in the fourth quarter.
“Once we established the lead, we were able to make the plays we needed to in the second half,” Valdin said. “We started to play like the better team.”
