Larayo is picking up right where it left off last season, as champion of the River Parish Swim League. In its opening meet on Thursday, the Barracudas traveled to face La Vacherie, and triumphed 381-172.
“They were good races. They were able to challenge even our strongest swimmers at times,” Larayo coach Michelle Jensen said. “But across the board, we were too strong.”
Jensen listed Maggie Trepagnier, Hailey Specht, Meredith Keating, Kelsie Williams, Emily Brady and Kristy Brady as girls who stood out during the meet. All notched multiple first and second place finishes.
Seeing Kristy Brady return, in particular, was noted as a big positive by Jensen. Brady did not swim last year due to scheduling conflicts, but made a successful return this year.
“She has been swimming since she was four years old,” Jensen said. “It’s really a highlight to see her swim again.”
Among boys, Brandon Klibert and Andrew Whitman stood out. Whitman captured first place in three events, while Klibert took first place honors in two.
Larayo took a 63-45 lead after the freestyle event. It increased the lead to 130-86 after the backstroke; to 209-114 after the breaststroke; to 262 to 151 after the butterfly; to 311-172 after the medley relay; and to the final, 381-172 after the freestyle relay.
