EDGARD – The judges of the 40th Judicial District Court hosted its annual celebration of the law and legal system Thursday morning, inviting residents throughout St. John Parish to partake in a festival of justice.
Numerous Bar members, parish residents, officials and the sixth grade class from West St. John Elementary attended Law Day, hosted by Judge Sterling Snowdy and featuring local attorney Tomy Acosta as a guest speaker.
This year’s law day was titled “Liberty Under Law: Empowering Youth, Ensuring Democracy.” Each judge hosts a Law Day every three years.
The students were invited to watch court proceedings by Judge Madeline Jasmine before filing into the main courtroom.
“This day is just one of many days out of the year when we can exhibit our dedication to the parish,” Division C Judicial Law Clerk Melissa Tannehill said.
“We were very happy with the program and the turn-out,” Snowdy said. “We had refreshments in the hallway and the kids were really hungry this year and we’re really happy they came.”
