When it comes to softball between Riverside and St. Charles, it will undoubtedly come down to the wire.
So was the case in the first 10-2A outing of the season between the Lady Comets and the Lady Rebels Thursday afternoon at St. Charles, as the SCC squad held off a fierce rally late in the game by Riverside to preserve a 4-3 win.
The loss puts the Lady Rebels at 0-2 in district play following a 5-2 loss to Curtis on Tuesday afternoon in Reserve.
The win puts the Lady Comets at 6-1 on the season with one district game under their belt.
And the home team got off to a quick start in their district opener Thursday, putting up four hits and four runs in the first two innings of play. Pitcher Ashley Trosclair took her sixth win in as many games from the mound, as she went perfect from the mound for the first four innings before Riverside picked up the pace with six hits in the final three innnigs.
Nicole Poirrier got the start for the Lady Rebels and settled down by the third inning to pin SCC down after their 4-0 lead going into the third. Poirrier took the plate in the top of the sixth and drove a two-run homer that scored Nicole Simon after she had reached on a single. That, coupled with a run in the fifth inning after a hit by Brittany Schoen, made it a one run game with an inning left to play.
With that chance, Schoen again reached base with one out to represent the tying run. But Trosclair got the next to batters to fly out to end the threat.
SCC’s offense scored their first inning run on an RBI triple by Addie Reine and built on their lead in the second with a double by Courtney Western and an error after a bunt by Katie Tregre that brought in Western and Stephanie Caporella.
Both squads are set to take part in tournaments this weekend as SCC heads to the Northshore tourney and Riverside is set for the Hahnville tourney.
The district rematch between the two squads is set for March 27 at Riverside.
