DESTREHAN – Coach Paul Dupuy finally broke Destrehan soccer’s streak over East St. John last Friday night.
Before then, ESJ soccer had never before beaten DHS Dupuy said at practice Thursday afternoon. But with Ricky Grimstead’s goal about mid-way through the second half, on Destrehan’s home field, East St. John was well on their way.
“We got them,” Dupuy said right after the final whistle was blown and his team let out with a short celebration that helped vent years of frustration to their in-district Wildcat rivals. “Ricky [Grimstead] came up with it about 20 minutes into the second half. But our defense came up big before and after that.”
In the first period of play, the teams dueled to a 1-1 tie. ESJ scored first with a goal by Steven Haniford. DHS matched with a point scored by Devin Stewart.
They also split the field position battle fairly evenly, though DHS had a better share of shots on goal. But with goalie Kris Hoffpauir in the ESJ net, the 5A Wildcats of St. John Parish held the St. Charles Parish Widlcats in check.
