Brooke Becker and Michelle Marzoni combined for 51 points last Friday night at St. James as St. Charles took a 65-61 district win in overtime, to boost the Lady Comet’s 10-2A record to 2-0.
A slow start saw SCC fall behind by ten points in the opening period. But the St. Charles squad found their rhythm in the second quarter, using a 17-10 run to bring it into halftime at 26-23 in favor of St. James.
After the break, the Lady Comets picked right back up where they left off and the Wildcats found their stroke as well as the two teams battled each other to a one point game heading into the fourth period. Brooke Becker helped lead the charge throughout, posting 27 points while St. James’ Brandi Jefferey matched that with 27 of her own. Once the final clock expired, the teams were left in a 55-55 tie.
The difference came in the overtime period as SCC managed to put themselves into a lead which they were able to extend to four points with the help of some pressure defense. Marzoni’s 24 points secured the win for SCC while Alicia Roussel and Gina Monica each added six.
Anika Duronselet was the only other player for St. James to hit double digits. She had 19 while Brianne Gros contributed six.
St. Charles season record goes to 11-12 on the season and is undefeated through two district games. St. James drops to 0-2 in 10-2A play with the loss.
The two teams are set to meet again this month on Jan. 26 in LaPlace.
