LAPLACE – St. Charles improved to 10-8 on the season with a straight set win over Archbishop Hannan Thursday, to complete a season sweep of the Lady Hawks after dispatching Lutcher earlier in the week.

It opened fast in favor of SCC. Meg Gustafason sparked her team and made it 4-1 to the home team’s advantage with a second-volley spike between frozen defenders. Lauren Coniglio and Katie Tregre added to that with a kill and an ace, respectively, before an Ashley Trosclair tip-over the outstretched arms of several Hannan blockers pushed the score to 8-1.

The run would continue all the way to an 18-3 score before Hannan found some momentum, which they used to work their way back to an 18-10 score. But Gustafason broke that with a kill and took the serve on the rotation. Then, Tregre kept the ball rolling with a defensive play at the net. Gina Monica finished the game off with a scoring serve to make it 25-13.

The Lady Comets carried that over to the next game when they got ahead 8-1 to start off. A Hannan timeout did little to stop the bleeding however and SCC’s Coniglio helped secure the win for her team with a late block and a pair of kills in the 25-7 victory.

The third game was far more competitive as Hannan came out firing and got their first lead of the afternoon.

The teams traded scores and sideouts throughout, with more than seven ties in the final 15 points of the match. Coniglio showed up big in the crunch time again, with a pair of kills and a block to make it 22-21 in SCC’s favor. She also served for game point, which finished 25-22 on a Hannan offensive error.

Monica recorded 21 assists throughout while Coniglio posted a dozen kills.

The Lady Comets had also previously defeated Hannan in three straight in a match earlier this month.

It looked good for the LHS team early on as they opened with an 18-25 win on the Lady Comets court in LaPlace. But with an SCC adjustment, the home squad tied it up with a hard-fought 25-22 win and took the lead in the third game when it finished 25-18.

Lutcher made St. Charles earn the win though, nearly forcing extra points in a 25-23 finale.

Katie Duhe again led her team statistically, but several Lady Comets shone brighter including Lauren Coniglio with ten kills and five aces.
