LAPLACE – St. Charles didn’t waste much time doing anything Friday night against 5A Ponchatoula.

Especially not with punting.

Scoring early and often, the Comets put a pounding on the Green Wave and never relented. With not a single punt in the first half, SCC went up 35-0 by halftime and kept the pressure on with a defensive effort that left Ponchatoula quarterback Jamarius Porche 3-for-10 passing on the night.

Jonathan Cancienne led the Comets in their romp with a running game where he recorded four touchdowns on 12 carries covering 128 yards. He got things started with SCC’s first two scores for a 15-0 lead after a Chase Fletcher two-point conversion on the second one.

Matt Erickson then got into the production with a pair of touchdown passes, the first coming from Vincent Rollo under center which covered 39 yards, and the second from Philip Sutton from six yards out.

Ponchatoula put up a fight in the game, totaling 241 yards to St. Charles’ 298, but were turned away each time including twice in the first half while well into Comet territory. Also in the first half, a Green Wave punt was blocked by Garrett Biven and recovered by Corey Reed. Reed would also score the last points of the game on a 57-yard fumble return as time expired.

In the second half, Cancienne got his second and third TDs with up the middle bursts of 32 and 62 yards.

The Comets defense gave up their first points of the season late in the fourth quarter when Ponchatoula pulled off a halfback pass for 21 yards and a touchdown. They also forced three fumbles and recovered one.

Sutton finished early on in the night, but recorded 7-of-9 completions for 123 yards through the air.
