LAPLACE — Yet again, the sale of land near the St. John Airport was delayed at this week’s meeting of the St. John Parish Council, with a resolution still not in sight.
Proceeds from the sale were earmarked for financing a long-planned parish animal shelter.
Council members Sean Roussel and Allen St. Pierre’s proposal is to sell six and a half acres on Airport Road to Land-Glo LLC, who would in turn lease it to SWDI, the solid-waste contractor for the parish.
The proposal has been stalled by the other council members, after they heard opposition from the Airport Advisory Board and also from other causes for delay of action.
At their June 28 meeting, the council decided the proposal had not been property advertised. At the July 13 meeting, Airport Advisory Board Chairman “Bever” Borne voiced his opposition, joined by the parish’s own airport marketing consultant Gerald Babin.
Babin declared at that meeting that the sale would be a bad business decision.
Meanwhile, Roussel said at Tuesday’s meeting, he said he spoke with SWDI officials, who are agreeable to relocating from their present site on Central Avenue in Reserve to another site.
“We’re willing to put it off another two weeks until we find some definite resolution,” Roussel told the council. “My opinion is, it needs to be resolved.”
The matter is tabled to the Aug. 15 meeting, changed from Aug. 8 due to NACo.
