RESERVE — Defense proved to be the key for the Lady Hahnville Tigers as they topped the Lady Wildcats of East St. John High Tuesday. Tigers pitcher Chelsey Flores recorded the win after some costly defensive errors allowed the winning runs to score late in the contest.

In the top of the third, down 1-0, Wildcats pitcher Flores hits a two-out single to short left only to be advanced on the next play on a wild pitch. With a runner at second base, Stacy Sutton strikes out Wildcats right fielder Gia Bridges to end the top half of the inning.

The Tigers put their only run on the board in the bottom half of the third starting the rally off with a bloop single to short center field by Janay Claviere. Sutton advanced Claviere to third with a hot shot just over second base. A fielding error near third base allows Claviere to walk in for the Tigers first and final run.

In the top of the sixth, the score still tied 1-1, third baseman Ariel Romero pops a fly in left that’s mishandled allowing Romero to hold up at second. Kristen Louque bunted the very next play which ended up in another Wildcats error on the attempted throw-out at first base scoring Romero, which would prove to be the winning run.

In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats would add an insurance run after a triple by Bridges leads to another mishandles play by the Tigers. Flores nailed a deep shot to center field that’s caught by Lacy Sutton. Bridges tagged up and headed for home only to be cut off on a perfect strike thrown from center field. Tigers catcher Kayla Tamplain could not manage to hang on to the ball allowing the third and final run for the Wildcats to score.
