LAPLACE – In the second district meeting between St. Charles and Riverside on the softball field, the Lady Rebs got revenge.
After dropping the first match-up against the Lady Comets by a score of 10-2, the Riverside softball squad came into LaPlace on Tuesday in need of a win after going 1-3 through the first two weeks of 10-2A play. And with Cara St. Amant on the mound, the Lady Rebels were able to do just that.
Scoreless through the first three innings, SCC looked ready to be the first to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Addie Reine reached base when she walked with one out to start it off. Lauren Coniglio chopped a shot into leftfield to put Reine in scoring position before a hotline between the third baseman and the shortstop to load the bases. But St. Amant pulled the Lady Rebels out of the jam when she fielded a one-hopper and tossed it home to narrowly force the final out of the inning.
Riverside took advantage of the defensive stand with a fifth inning burst from the batter’s box. Nicole Simon
led off with an infield hit and reached base after SCC first baseman stepped off of the bag while making the catch. Brittany St. Pierre came up next with a single to left-center field and was followed onto the base path when Bridget Petit took a walk. A single by Lisa Lambert pushed in Simon and Nicole Porrier sacrificed to centerfield to record another RBI and a 2-0 lead.
Unable to post any runs in the bottom of the fifth, SCC returned to the field for the sixth where the Lady Rebels wasted little time in padding their lead. St. Peirre got another hit on her at-bat when she hit a two-run double and Petit capped off Riverside’s scoring with a blooper to leftfield to score St. Pierre. After that, the Lady Rebles held off the Lady Comet’s offense to get the eventual 5-0 win.
The outcome puts St. Charles just a half a game ahead of Riverside in district play. The Lady Comets hold a 9-12 season record, 2-2 in district, while the Lady Rebs stand at 7-12, and 2-3.
