RESERVE — ESJ LadyCat basketball got back to their winning ways when they were the first local team to capture their district last week with a 47-39 win over the Hahnville Lady Tigers on Friday night.
Hahnville’s boys squad played the late game on Friday and wrapped up first place in 5-5A with a 66-63 clutch overtime victory over the Wildcats.
The girls’ game got off to a fast start for the ESJ squad as Stasha Thomas rolled off four straight points to open the game and give the LadyCats a lead that they would never give up. It was the ESJ defense that did it, as HHS could only manage single-digit scoring in the first three quarters for a 31-20 LadyCat lead.
A high scoring fourth quarter by both teams kept it competitive, but ESJ left with the win by a score of 47-39.
Thomas led all scorers in the game with 19 for East St. John while Nadia Cox and Naomi Hills led the Lady Tigers in the effort. With the win, ESJ goes to 28-6, 6-1 on the season while the HHS squad falls to 12-15, 2-4.
The boys’ game found the East St. John squad down early and rallying in the third quarter of play to tie things up. An evenly matched fourth quarter turned in 14 points apiece for each team and sent the game into overtime.
But clutch play for the Tigers gave them a three point advantage by the waning moments of the extended period and HHS took the 66-63 win. Trenton Marshall, of ESJ, and Reginald Lumar, of Hahnville, led all scorers with 21 each. The Tigers’ Ravon Singleton added 17 while the Wildcats’ Willie Lago posted 14.
The win puts the Tigers at 22-6, 5-0 on the season while ESJ drops to 18-11, 2-3.
Coming up for the Tigers, they host West Jeff this week.
East St. John will be returning to action when they travel to take on John Ehret.
