DENTON, TEXAS – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal funds totaling $153 million have been awarded to help feed and shelter the nation’s hungry and homeless. 

Louisiana will receive $2,334,811 from FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program.  

In the River Region, the totals to be awarded are as follows:

&#8220The Emergency Food and Shelter Program is a good example of how the federal government can forge public/private partnerships to help communities help themselves and assist thousands of people facing non-disaster emergencies,” said FEMA Acting Regional Director Gary Jones.  &#8220We applaud the efforts of local groups who help people in need throughout the year.”  

FEMA will distribute the money to local boards to help nonprofit and local government agencies feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and prevent hunger and homelessness during fiscal year 2006.  

Jurisdictions that did not qualify for a direct award may receive a grant through the Arkansas set-aside committee.  State set-aside committees receive funds based upon the number of unemployed people in counties within their state that do not qualify under the National Board’s criteria.
