LAPLACE — A mother and her son lost their lives Tuesday night after a two-car accident on Highway US 51, in LaPlace, leaving the other three victims injured.

At around 5 p.m., a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by William Veal, 25, of LaPlace, was making a left turn across the northbound lanes of US 51. The car struck a 1999 Ford Contour, driven by Yvonne Lewicki, 59, of Hammond, traveling northbound in the left lane, according to Louisiana State Police Trooper Omar Landrum.

&#8220Mr. Veal, for unknown reason, turned in the path of Mrs. Lewicki,” Landrum said. &#8220The front of the Ford Contour struck the right side of the Chevrolet Cavalier. As a result of the impact, the front sear passenger of the Chevrolet Cavalier, Miriam Smith, 25, of LaPlace, suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead on the scene.”

Landrum said Smith’s 11-month old son, Dorion Veal, suffered critical injuries and was transported to River Parishes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead that evening.

The other back seat passenger, 2-year old Kaybien Picou, and Veal suffered minor to moderate injuries and were treated at River Parish Hospital.

Mrs. Lewicki was also transported to River Parishes Hospital, and sustained minor injuries.

&#8220The infant was restrained in a forward facing child seat and the 2-year old child was in a booster seat,” Landrum said. &#8220Alcohol is not suspected. Blood results are pending.”
