CONVENT — A 27-year-old woman from Convent was allegedly shot in the head and killed in her home on Monday night by her boyfriend from Belle Rose.
The St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call about a shooting around 10 p.m. on Hargis Street in Convent.
When the deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Shanikra Striggs had been shot in the head and was unresponsive, according to Capt. Sid Berthelot, spokesman for the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Berthelot said Acadian Ambulance responded to the incident, but were unable to revive Striggs, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial call was made by Striggs’ mother, and she stated her daughter had been shot by 33-year-old Steve Hayes Jr. She also stated that after he allegedly shot her daughter, he fled on foot from the scene, according to the incident report.
“Numerous deputies, along with tracking dogs from Hunt Correctional Center, searched the area for the suspect,” Berthelot said. “At approximately 3:06 a.m. on Nov. 8, deputies apprehended Steve Hayes Jr. on Pleasant Hill Street in Convent.”
Hayes was transported to the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office and was charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Sheriff’s Office awaiting bond, according to the incident
report.
Berthelot said Hayes was interviewed and it seem that the two got into a dispute that led to one of them being shot.
Hayes is being held on a $500,000 bond, set by Judge Guy Holdridge.
