LAPLACE — Many displaced people in the River Parishes, cut off from their jobs and businesses in New Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Jefferson parishes, are trying to find income and need jobs.

The River Region Chamber of Commerce, working with the River Parishes Workforce Investment Act and the St. John the Baptist Parish One-Stop Career Center, is trying to match people and jobs with job fairs this week, according to Chamber Executive Director Chassity McComack.

In St. John Parish, a job fair is set on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the One-Stop Career Center, 975 Cambridge Drive, LaPlace, between Riverbend Lanes bowling alley and Riverland Skate Center.

Among those due to participate at the St. John job fair are Metairie Manpower, LaPlace Manpower, River Parish Maintenance, Willstaff, Lowe’s, Twin Oaks, AM-PM Staffing, Stewart Services, Southern Custom Builders, Wal-Mart Boutte, St. Charles Parrish Hospital, Hampton Inn and Bull’s Corner, McComack said.

In St. James Parish, a job fair is set on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the West Bank Reception Center, located at 2455 Hwy. 19, in Vacherie.

Confirmed to participate in the St. James job fair are Crescent City Moving, The Shaw Group, Willstaff of Gonzales, AM-PM Temporary Services, St. James Stevedoring, LaChip and Holiday Inn.

In other Chamber-related activity, the “No Bad Days” seminar is still scheduled today, 8:30 a.m. to noon, at Shannon’s Health and Fitness Center, located at 8896 Richmond Drive in LaPlace.

McComack also said a “Disaster Resource” page has been added to the Chamber

website, with useful links to helpful people and organizations toward obtaining disaster relief funds. The website is at www.riverregionchamber.org.

There are also direct links to each parish’s website on the Chamber site.
