LAPLACE-Several reports of criminal mischief and criminal trespassing recently reported in the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office incident reports may point to a familiar annual trend: when school’s out, our kids may be looking for something to do, and that something may just be trouble.

On Sunday, several juveniles were reported to be riding around in a car and shooting windows out, and another complaint involved two juveniles breaking bottles. Though there were no further details on either of these incidents at press time, according to Major Mike Tregre, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, it is a typical summer problem.

“We tend to have a little jump in those incidents during the summer,” Tregre said, “The kids get a little bored.”

Tregre also said that while there is no special location in which they do it, teens tend to congregate much more in one space and this sometimes leads to troublesome behavior.

In order to control this, Tregre said the sheriff’s office puts more of a focus on a mandated curfew.

“We enforce the curfew more during the summer,” Tregre said, “in order to get them off the street to avoid criminal mischief.”

Several incidents have also occurred where schools are vandalized over the summer. Tregre said it is routine to have some security for the schools, but the sheriff’s office does not do any more security than usual.

Schools tend to give out reading lists for students during the summer. Parents may want to make sure their kids have something to do.
