DESTREHAN-Sloan Stumper is starting to show everyone that the Destrehan Lady Wildcats may have something that teams are craving throughout the season and rarely have.

Pitching depth.

Emerging as her team’s second option in the circle behind ace Julianne Beaugh, Stumper picked up a complete game victory Thursday afternoon as the Lady Wildcats defeated South Lafourche 8-2 at home.

With the win Destrehan is now 16-5-3 on the season and their 9-2 record in district 6-5A puts them in sole possession of second place.

Courtney Berthelot and Kaci Wilson provided all the offensive punch that Stumper would need in the circle as the duo both went 3-4, with Berthelot driving in a pair of runs and Wilson driving in one.

Destrehan scored a pair of runs in the first, three in the third and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning.

Stumper meanwhile was brilliant in the circle, going all seven innings and allowing only two runs on three hits and striking out three and walking two.

Although his team won handily, Destrehan Head Coach Russell Shaw said his team must still continue to improve.

“We won and that is great but we didn’t play our best game,” Shaw said. “Honestly we didn’t play very well at all. But we were still able to play well enough to win the game and a district victory is a district victory.

“We just didn’t execute offensively. We had opportunities to bust the game open early and we didn’t do that. We let South Lafourche hang around for five innings and I wasn’t comfortable with that. I know what my kids capabilities are and from a coach’s standpoint I know they didn’t play the best that they could play.”

He was however pleased with Stumper’s performance in the circle.

“Sloan is pitching well,” Shaw said. “And she is a totally different pitcher than Julianne and that will really help us win.”
