DESTREHAN-If you look at the final score of the Destrehan-Ellender softball game on Thursday afternoon, one would think that the Lady Wildcats dominated the complete game.

Guess again.

A 3-1 game heading into the seventh inning, the Lady Wildcats erupted for seven runs en route to the 12-1 dominating victory.

Sloan Stumper picked up the win in the circle for Destrehan, going three innings and striking out three while ace Julianne Beaugh picked up the save with four innings of work and also striking out three.

16-5-3 on the season overall and 7-2 in district 6-5A, Destrehan got all the offense they needed from a trio of hitters.

Casey Wilson continues to hit the ball well as she launched another solo home run. Casey Clark and Courtney Berthelot also had solid games with doubles.

“We didn’t’ do a good job the first few innings offensively,” Destrehan Head Coach Russell Shaw said. “We kept hitting the ball, but it was hard and foul. We finally made the adjustments that we needed to make in the seventh inning and let the ball come through the strike zone a little bit instead of being out in front of it. We let the ball get back and started driving the ball and the result was seven runs on the scoreboard. That was what we were trying to do all along.

“It did not happen until the seventh inning but once it did, it was contagious. The first couple of kids got hits and then we started rolling. Once one person gets a hit sometimes is just catches on and that is what happened on Thursday afternoon.

While the offense erupted for 12 runs, Shaw was also happy with the one run given up in the circle by Stumper and Beaugh.

“It was not bad,” Shaw said. “It was a good effort by both pitchers. They both did the job that we asked them to do. I was satisfied with their performances in the circle against Ellender.”
