LAPLACE-It is very rare for a high school baseball team to finish the season without a loss.

After a 11-0 defeat at the hands of Holy Cross on Monday afternoon, the St. Charles Catholic Comets hope they have gotten losing out of their system for a while.

Behind a hitting machine that produced 15 hits in only five innings, the Tigers handed the Comets their first loss of the season.

Getting only one runner to third base the entire game, St. Charles Catholic (3-1) finished the game with only four hits.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, Holy Cross (3-0) scored a single run in the second on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Matt Vitrano.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 4-0 in the third inning thanks to a RBI double from Drew Allain and a opposite field two-run homer from first baseman Chad Stone.

An two-run single by Stone an inning later in the fourth extended the Holy Cross lead to 6-0.

Stone had a monstrous day at the plate for Holy Cross, finishing the game 4-4 with five runs driven in to go along with a homer, double and pair of singles.

The Tigers put the game away for good in the fifth inning with five runs on six hits, highlighted by a pair of two-run homers by Vitrano and shortstop Tre’ Lips.

The Comets best scoring threat came in the bottom of the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. However, Tigers starter Phil White struck out center-fielder Jonathan Cancienne to end the threat.

White (2-0) picked up his second victory of the season for Holy Cross, surrendering only three hits in four innings of work, striking out six and walking only two.

Jesse Martin (0-1) was the losing pitcher for the Comets, giving up five runs on eight hits in three and two-thirds innings of work. Martin struck out four and walked one on the afternoon.

SCC Head Coach Paul Waguespack said it was just one of those games.

“They are a good baseball team,” Waguespack said. “They are definitely going to contend for their district title. They have a chance to go a long ways with a kid like White in their rotation. He’s a good ballplayer. There is always tomorrow for us and that is how I have to look at it.”
