Call it the schedule, call it poor opponents or whatever you chose, but you have to say that the East St. John girls basketball team is on a very big roll right now.

Racking up another big victory, the Lady Wildcats defeated Terrebone, 50-23, Tuesday night.

Gaynelle Brown led East St. John with 11 points and Stasha Thomas added 10 points for the Lady Wildcats.

With the win, East St. John improves to 19-14 on the season and 8-3 in district play.

East St. John head coach Troy Giordano said his team came out and did what they had to do to come away with the victory.

“I told my team that we played good,” Giordano said. “We played well and everyone got to play. It was one of the games that was very similar to the Central Lafourche game. It was a team that we were much better than, everybody got to play, we ran some different things.

“In a game like that you just want to get the win, get through it healthy, move on and get to the bulk of the schedule now.”

Outscoring Terrebone 50-23 in the first half, Giordano said the difference in the first half was his team’s relentless pressure defense.

“We halfcourt trapped them nearly every time in the first half,” Giordano said. “Turnovers were caused and they led to layups. We also shot well from the outside.

“We were just able to score a lot of easy buckets.”

Giordano said he was also happy to once again be able to rest most of his starters in preparation for a very tough upcoming slate of games.

“When you play the types of teams that we have played the last two games you are suppose to put them away early,” Giordano said. “I felt like that is what we did and we were able to rest our starters again.”We did what we were suppose to do. We got the win. Now we have to move on because we have five big games coming up now.”

After returning to district action yesterday, the Wildcats play host to the State Hall of Fame Classic at East St. John this Sunday.

East St. John opens up play this Sunday at 11:00 am. McMain takes on Chapelle at 12:30 pm. At 2:00 pm, Ellender takes on St. Mary’s and at 3:30 powerhouse Dominican takes on Cabrini.

Admission is $5.00 for the all-day classic.
