West St. John fans are starting to find out that there team is a lot more than just star player Jada Fiffie.

A reward for them founding this out is that they are also starting to discover what it is like to win games.

The Lady Rams ran their district record to 4-2 this past week when they defeated Buras 57-23.

The win over Buras also evened West St. John’s overall record at 6-6.

Fiffie again had another solid night for the Lady Rams. She led West St. John with 22 points.

Tranelle Mitchell also had 12 points and Kelly Young added 11 points in the victory.

The Rams jumped on Buras early and never looked back. West St. John outscored Buras 24-2 in the first quarter thanks to a solid defensive effort.

West St. John head coach Lester Smith was pleased with his team’s performance against Buras and hopes it translates into a long winning streak.

“I can’t ask for any better of an effort than my team played in the first quarter,” Smith said. “We played good defense. We forced about five straight turnovers which allowed us to get several easy baskets in transition.

“This is definitely the first time that we ever had a first quarter like that where everything seemed to go right from the defensive side to the offensive side. We had a complete effort early in the game.”

Smith said he was also happy to see another balanced scoring effort which took the pressure of his star player in Fiffie.

“The key was that we had about five or six other people score,” Smith said. “Kelly had 11 and Tranelle had 12. It helps us out tremendously because it allows Jada to play more relaxed out there.

“After last Friday, she definitely is playing more relaxed and made some key baskets in critical situations for us. She hit one nearly from mid-court at the buzzer. We like how we are playing right now and what is coming up on our schedule.”
