LAPLACE – Edward Placide Jr. was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years of hard labor for the Feb. 17, 2004 shooting death of his father, according to the clerk of court’s office in Edgard.

The 30-year-old man, formerly of 1505 Belle Point Blvd. accepted a plea bargain that does not allow him the possibility of parole, probation or a suspended sentence.

The plea deal was orchestrated by District Attorney John M. Crum Jr. and was signed by Assistant District Attorney William O’Regan.

It said Placide, violated the state statute, when he knowingly and intentionally possessed a firearm after having committed simple robbery in St. James Parish.

In addition to the prison sentence, Placide was fined $1,000 and he must pay court costs levied at $210.50.

On April 5, 2004, Placide pled not guilty to killing his 57-year-old father, Edward Placide Sr.

Placide Sr. was shot twice in his right leg by his son, after the two argued in Placide’s kitchen/living room over the father’s use of another son’s 1998 Oldsmobile. He died in the River Parishes Hospital on Feb. 18 at 1:11 a.m.

Placide Jr. told authorities he shot his father in self defense, alleging his father hefted an iron fireplace poker during the father-son argument. His story was substantiated by Corey Placide, who owned the Oldsmobile that his father and brother argued over.

Attorney Jeffrey Hand defended Placide Jr.

Fortieth District Judge Mary Hotard Becnel presided over the case.
