It’s still very early in the season for St. Charles Catholic.

Poor shooting and defense cost the Comets against McMain Wednesday night as SCC fell to McMain 58-53 in the Riverside Tournament.

Andrew Coleman led the Comets with 17 points and Travis Sanders added 10. Chris Cooper led McMain with 16 points.

Leading for nearly the entire first half, SCC (8-10) fell behind 21-19 a minute and a half into the third quarter and never regained the lead. Tying the game at 53 with 1:01 remaining, the Comets missed four straight free throws and failed to score another point.

St. Charles Catholic head coach Jeff Montz was disappointed with his team’s inability to come up with a big play.

“We had opportunities and just couldn’t take advantage of them,” Montz said after the game. “That’s all you can really say. We had opportunities to win and we just didn’t take care of business.”

Finishing the game with a team high 17 points, Coleman said his team must fight through and improve on their mistakes if they are to have a successful season.

“I just don’t know what happened out there tonight,” Coleman said. “We just need to find a way to win, we have to do that if we want to win.”
