Scholarship programs announced for students in River Parishes

The Saints Board of Realtors is announcing the availability of a $1,000 academic scholarship. It will be awarded to a student residing in St. Charles, St. James or St. John Parish. Only applicants who reside in one of these parishes is eligible.

Application packets are available in public libraries and the local high school in the three parishes.

Entries must be mailed and postmarked by April 20, 2004 to be considered. Only applications that meet all criteria and deadlines are eligible.

Young cancer survivors preparing for higher education may be eligible for scholarships from the Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society. For the fourth consecutive year, this division will award $1,000 scholarships to eligible individuals who have fought cancer and are attending an accredited university, college or vocational/technical school. To be eligible, applicants must be under 25-years-old, had a cancer diagnosis before age 21, hold a GPA of at least 2.5 and been accepted to an accredited school. La Flambeau Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is funding a special scholarship through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund. This is a charitable trust and public foundation. The one-time scholarships are not renewable, and funds are limited to tuition, books and fees.

Women who will be at the college freshmen level in August 2004, and are residents of St. John Parish or St. Charles Parish are eligible. Other qualifications: they are attending, or have been accepted at, an accredited college or university in Louisiana authorized to confer degrees at the minimum of baccalaureate level or above..

They also must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.

Applications are available in the guidance counselor offices of all high schools located in St. Charles and St. John Parishes.
