LAPLACE – For those that want to observe Valentine’s Day, but can’t make elaborate plans – take heed. You can still fit some sense of party time or special ‘bonding’ time’ into your day.
Whether it is lack of money, work hours or other commitments that limit this celebratory day, using a little creativity can make you feel like you haven’t lost out.
Carrie Walters works the afternoon shift at the hospital, so won’t be with her family Saturday night. “We are going to have a Valentine Breakfast,” said the registered nurse. “My kids heard about this idea at school.”
The menu includes heart-shape pancakes and biscuits with strawberry jelly, among other delectables. Walter’s 10-year-old son, Jason, is assisting with the preparation and is taking the job very seriously.
“He went through the pantry to find my cookie cutters,” said Walters. “He will use these for the pancakes.”
Lisa Millet, of LaPlace, and her daughter, Brandi, 17, will spend Valentine’s Day marching in the Caesar’s Parade in Metarie. Brandi belongs to the Archbishop Chaprelle High Steppers. Mom will be walking alongside the dance team during the festivities. Afterward, it will be dinner at home.
Carla Anderson, unit secretary at River Parishes hospital, celebrates her Valentine’s Day in a very unique way. She delivers candy to her two brothers and four sisters.
“I love Valentine’s Day, this is a special season,” said the LaPlace resident. “My daughter Chaziety and I deliver candy, and sometimes flowers, to my family. I thank God that I have the opportunity to do this.”
Other Valentine’s Day traditions continue throughout LaPlace.
Showing your loved ones how much you care by buying flowers, candy or a gift, is still a popular practice
According to Stacie Bourgeois, of Hymel’s Florist and Gifts, valentine flower orders have been steadily increasing in the past week, leading up to the big day. Many customers that stop in have also chosen a gift from the shop’s colorful display. On those shelves, you will find mini heart balloons and huge stuffed animals, among other items.
Newly-married Lyndia Moore, Destrehan, hopes to get something special from her husband this Saturday. ‘I really don’t care what it is, as long as he remembers,” she said. “This is our first Valentine’s Day together as married so it is really special.”
