RESERVE – If the Reserve Christian School Lady Eagles win the state championship, they can certainly thank guard Trenell Smith for her contributions.

Smith, who has scored a total of 88 points in the last two games, recently scored 37 points and lifted the RCS to an 89-32 rout of Mount Hermon High School.

After an evenly played first quarter, RCS held a 14-12 lead. The Lady Eagles pressure defense caused turnovers, but they also committed several fouls. Smith had 10 points in the first quarter. Also, Lady Eagles starter Randi Donald nailed two three-point shots in the quarter.

Two consecutive jumpers from By the Lady Jackets to end the first period cut the RCS lead to two. During the second period, RCS went to a man-to-man defense, which resulted in the team outscoring MHHS 33-12 in the quarter.

After Trenese Smith made the back end of a one-and-one, RCS held a 28-13 lead with 4:21 left in the quarter.

In addition, Donald’s putback with four seconds remaining until the half expanded the RCS lead to 47-14. The Lady Eagles pressure defense only allowed one field goal in the second period and Donald finished with 11 points in the period.

RCS continued the intensity in the second half. The third quarter saw Reserve Christian outscore Mount Hermon 20-8. After MHHS forward Kanesha Brumfield hit a basket, Trenell Smith scored the next seven RCS points, giving RCS an insurmountable 60-16 lead.

Despite having a huge lead, the Lady Eagles did not let up, constantly pressing and double-teaming on defense. In addition to Trenell Smith, Donald finished with 23 points and Trenese Smith finished with 21. For Mount Hermon, Jessica Brumfield finished with 10 points and Nepreya Brumfield had seven points in the loss. With the win, Reserve Christian improved to 5-0 in the district. The loss dropped Mount Hermon to 4-17 (1-2 district).

The Lady Eagles return to “The Nest” on Feb. 14 when they host West St. John.
