Lady Wildcats crush Lady Tigers

BOUTTE – The Destrehan High School Lady Wildcats probably played their best game defensively all year in a recent 49-33 defeat of Hahnville High School.
As an example, DHS only allowed HHS three free throws in the third quarter. DHS starter Ashley Sentimore led all scorers with 14 points.
The first quarter saw both schools score quickly. Trailing 6-2, Lady Tigers starter Jazzlyn Young pulled up and hit a jumper making the score 6-4 DHS. Hahnville then went on a 5-0 run to grab a 9-6 lead. The run was capped off by Cashmir White’s three-point play with 2:11 left in the opening quarter.
The Lady Wildcats then went on their own run to end the quarter. Nine unanswered points resulted in a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Lady Wildcats senior Megan Stock scored seven points in the quarter. During the second period, Hahnville committed turnover after turnover resulting in easy baskets for Destrehan.
The home team turned it over 16 times in the first two quarters. In addition, HHS’s last basket of the half, courtesy of White, came with 5:07 remaining in the second quarter.
DHS (16-3, 5-0 district) outscored HHS (13-9, 2-3 district) 12-4 in the second period. The Lady Wildcats held a 27-15 lead at halftime.
Stock’s three-pointer to open the scoring in the third quarter made the score 30-15 Destrehan. A 6-0 spurt by DHS to end the third quarter gave the visiting team a 41-18 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Sherri Taylor, Tranise Hamilton and Sentimore each made baskets during the final minute of the quarter.
Lady Wildcats head coach Ulysses Frontha rested his starters in the final period, allowing the Lady Tigers to score more frequently.
Hahnville guard Whitney Scott’s layup made the score 43-24 DHS with about four minutes remaining in the game. Also, Young scored the final Hahnville points, giving DHS a 47-33 lead with 1:01 left.
In addition to Sentimore, Destrehan was led by Stock (12 points) and Jasmone Hawkins (7 points).
For HHS, Scott led the Lady Tigers attack with nine.
Destrehan returns to action at home Friday against H.L. Bourgeois at 6 p.m., while Hahnville travels to play Terrebonne Friday at 6 p.m.
