The Gray Line Tour: My Dads – and how I got lucky

I lucked out, no question about it.
Following my birth parents’ split, I was fortunate enough to come to Luling to live with my dad’s sister and her husband, Aunt Betty and Uncle Lawrence Owens.
I say fortunate because they gave me a good, solid childhoo, gave me much -needed discipline, instilled values and ethics and guided me through some turbulent times.
I came out of it a pretty decent human being (I think) and I hope I make them proud.
My father is still in my life as well, and he likewise provides me with affection, guidance and values.
But Uncle Lawrence has been my “real” father and it has been him who took this troubled child and helped mold me into the man I am.
Father’s Day is rough on many people. Either there is no love between fathers and children or the father is absent or gone.
I’m very lucky. I have fathers who have been true men, taking responsibility and being there for me.
But Uncle Lawrence deserves the real praise.
