AMBER KELLER
Generation X-treme For my spring break vacation this year I went on a mission trip to Mexico with a group from my church. The church we ministered to was in the city of Monte. I had a great time! We went sightseeing during the days, and we attended services every night. We saw a beautiful canyon, we swam in a cave and we jumped off a cliff into refreshing water from an underground spring. We also visited some of the little villages surrounding Monte. It was like a completely different world. Most people lived in mud huts with thatched roofs. Many get their water from the same stream they bathe in. This was all quite a culture shock, to say the least, but as I sat through the church services in Monte I realized something about these people. They serve the same God I serve, and they love Him regardless of their physical conditions. A friend of mine mentioned to our congregation when we returned that these people don’t quit God if they’re not abounding in earthly possessions. It seems that in America we think if God hasn’t blessed us with a nice car, a nice house and a comfortable amount of money, He must not be faithful. God never promised us we would be rich according to the world’s standards, but He did promise we would have riches in Heaven and we would share eternal life with Him if we believe and obey. I learned something very important from these people that seemed to be so different from me. I must learn to keep my head up and my eyes on God because He is faithful, and that is more than enough to keep me! AMBER KELLER, a local teen-ager, writes this column regularly for L’Observateur.
