The St. Charles Borromeo School Girls’ Junior Varsity basketball team made history this March. This team became the first girls basketball team in the River Parishes to win a city championship playoff game and the first to advance to the city championship finals. The girls junior varsity squad ended their 12-1 season, finishing second out of 89 Catholic schools in a five-parish area. The championship game was held at St. Joan of Arc on March 12. St. Charles Borromeo was named the Junior Girls River Parish Conference Champions and the Junior Girls River Parish Conference Tournament Champions. They lost to St. Angela Merici, 29-26 in the city championship finals. “They played an outstanding game,” head coach Anita Fenner said, as she reflected back on the game. Fenner, who just the year before coached at St. Angela Merici, thought that her girls played well. “I just told them that you will remember this for the rest of your life.” The St. Charles Borromeo girls ended the regular season with a perfect 9-0 mark before advancing to the tournament and championship game. St. Charles Borromeo competed against five other parishes including East and West Jefferson, Chalmette, Orleans, Northshore and the River Parishes.
