(Staff Photo by Amy Szpara) KENNER – A former Kenner teen charged with second-degree murder was flown in Wednesday night from Little Rock, Ark., where he had been living since the September 1999 murder of another Kenner teen-ager, found dumped in the Bonnet Carre Spillway almost two weeks ago. Michael Fasola, 18, arrested March 20 in Little Rock, waived extradition and arrived at the New Orleans International Airport at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. St. Charles Sheriff’s Department deputies escorted Fasola in handcuffs out of the airport, and he was later booked and is now being held in the St. Charles Parish Correctional Center in Hahnville. His bond was set at $2 million, said authorities. Accused of the shooting death of Jon Springman, which occurred 18 months ago, Fasola was arraigned Thursday morning. The skeletal remains of Springman were found by a fisherman March 13 at the Bonnet Carre Spillway, and dental records and other evidence found at the scene allowed a positive identification of the remains. After interviewing family and friends of Springman’s, authorities were able to determine that Springman, 16, was last seen leaving White Water Creek Apartments in Metairie with Fasola and another teen-ager. Authorities said that after an investigation, they learned that Springman had gone to the spillway with Fasola and the then-juvenile, whose name cannot be released, to shoot guns and smoke marijuana. For some reason, Fasola, who does have prior arrests that have not been disclosed by authorities, is believed to have turned his weapon towards Springman and shot him in the head. Springman’s body was placed in a 20-foot cement pit under Interstate 10 near Lake Ponchatrain, where no one found him until the fisherman stumbled upon the skeleton as he was smoking a cigarette above the concrete cylinder. The other youth, who is now 18, was booked with accessory to second-degree murder after the fact and is also being held at the St. Charles Parish Correctional Center. His bond is set at $250,000. Sixteen when the shooting occurred, he will be tried as a juvenile. According to authorities, the three boys did know each other, though Springman and Fasola were not good friends. Springman sometimes stayed at Fasola’s apartment, because it was shared by another friend of Springman’s. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.
