Youth summit participants sought

BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Louisiana Alliance to Prevent Underage Drinking are inviting teens to attend the Louisiana Youth Summit in Baton Rouge. High school students from every legislative district in Louisiana will convene April 22 to explore solutions to the underage drinking problem. One of the highlights scheduled during the meeting is an individual visit with legislators. The summit will conclude with a state media event where youth delegates will announce their recommendations to help tackle the underage drinking epidemic. One student delegate and one alternate from each of Louisiana’s Legislative districts will be selected to attend the summit. In addition, adult advisors and facilitator as well as youth facilitator will be chosen. Applicants should have a strong commitment to addressing the problem of underage drinking. They must also be willing to work with their local and state leaders to implement their recommendations when they return from the summit. Students interested in serving as delegates at the Louisiana Youth Summit must complete an application and return it to the summit office postmarked by Jan 12. No application fee is charged; however all youth delegates once selected will be asked to pay a $50 registration fee. Selected delegates are encouraged to find local sponsors to cover the cost of transportation to Baton Rouge, as well as they $50 registration fee. A limited number of scholarships are available.
