HHS, WSJ post impressive wins

BOUTTE – The Hahnville Tigers began defense of their District 7-5A championship with a convincing, 71-21, victory at home over South Terrebonne Wednesday night.
Hahnville improved to 16-4 overall while South Terrebonne fell to 3-16. Harold Comminie led Hahnville with 17 points. Dawan Landry added eight points while Nick Cannon, Al Mott, Mark Temple and Jermaine Scott had seven points apiece.
Hahnville jumped out to a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 39-5 at halftime. The Tigers took a 58-12 lead into the final quarter.
West St. John 48, Ridgewood 23
METAIRIE – West St. John, the defending District 9-2A champion, also started district play in a convincing fashion, 48-23, at Ridgewood Wednesday.
West St. John moved to 7-3 overall while Ridgewood dropped to 5-11.
Dwayne Bastain scored a game-high 14 points for the Rams. Kermit Bethancourt also broke into double figures with 10 points. Aaron Sylvain added six points.
West St. John led 12-3 at the end of one quarter and 26-14 at the break. That lead grew to 42-17 at the end of the third quarter.
Riverside 76, Buras 30
RESERVE – Riverside out-scored Buras, 28-8, in the second quarter to pull away to a 76-30 victory at home in the district opener for both teams Wednesday night.
Riverside improved to 9-7 with its second straight victory.
Riverside led 9-6 at the end of one before the Rebels went on the run in the second quarter to take a 37-17 lead at the break. Riverside kept it up in the third quarter, out-scoring the Wildcats, 26-8, to take a 63-25 lead.
Scottey Manson and Craig Tearney led the way for Riverside with 19 points apiece. Shawn Klibert added 10 points.
Lutcher 71, Salmen 70
SLIDELL – Donnie Francois scored a game-high 23 points to lead Lutcher to a 71-70 upset at Salmen in non-district play Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs trailed 18-16 at the end of the first quarter before rallying to take a 34-29 lead at the half. The Bulldogs then took a 46-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
Chris Johnson added 15 points for Lutcher which improved to 11-9 on the season. Courtney Long and Kayne Matherne had nine points apiece for the Bulldogs.
Salmen dropped to 13-6 on the season.
South Lafourche 58, Destrehan 52
GALLIANO – South Lafourche overcame a 26-22 halftime deficit to defeat Destrehan, 58-52, in the District 7-5A opener for both teams Tuesday night. The Tarpons improved to 10-8 overall with the win. Destrehan fell to 10-10 overall.
Destrehan trailed 13-9 at the end of the first quarter before out-scoring South Lafourche, 17-9, in the second.
The Tarpons came back with a 16-10 third quarter to grab a 38-36 lead. Jasmine Eugene led Destrehan with 15 points. Chris Moore tossed in 13 while Mark Stewart added 11.
Chris Bruce and Adam Minor had 14 points apiece for South Lafourche.
St. Charles Catholic 82, Lutheran 57
LAPLACE – Aaron Johnson had 22 points and Daress Nicholas 21 as St. Charles Catholic defeated Lutheran, 82-57, in non-district play Tuesday night.
The Comets improved to 15-6 overall while Lutheran fell to 4-6. St. Charles Catholic led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 40-26 at halftime.
The Comets increased the lead to 60-36 heading into the final eight minutes. Alton Alexander added 16 points for the Comets.
