River Parish residents can help protect Louisiana’s coastal wetlands by donating their Christmas trees to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Christmas Tree program.
The program is designed to protect Louisiana’s coastal wetlands against further erosion by using donated trees as a barrier.
Residents who donate trees will also help reduce the amount of space used in Louisiana landfills. This will allow for more space in existing landfills andreduce the increasing need to create more landfills, paid for by taxpayers.
Anyone interested in donating their tree should contact their area recycling representative. Residents of St. John Parish should call Julia Remondet at652-9569, in St. Charles Parish call Chandra Duag at 764-1207 and in St.James Parish call Jody Chenier at 562-2261.
For more information on recycling, call the DEQ Recycling Assistance Center at (225) 765-0149 or toll-free at (800) 305-6621.
