The St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation isholding registration for girls’ basketball ages 13-14. Any girl interestedin playing for the St. Charles Parish Recreation Department can call 783-5090. This is the first year girls All Stars for 13-14 will be elgible toplay Pre-Prep.

The St. John Parish Louisiana Hurricanes of the North AmericanFootball League are looking for players with college experience. Playersmust be willing to commit to three practices a week. A Hurricanes tryout combine will be held in thespring. Time and place will be announced at a later date.

Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All-Star Summer Basketball camp. Boys ages 8-19 and girls ages 10-19 canapply. Players are selected by invitational only.Past participants include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Antawn Jamison, Christian Laettner, Tom Gugliotta and Trajan Langdon.

Camp locations include Commerce and Fort Worth, Texas; Redlands and Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Babson Park, Fla.; Gainesville, Ga.; Champagne andMacomb, Ill.; Greencastle, Ind.; Atchison, Kan.; Midway, Ky.; Hillsdale,Mich.; St. Paul, Minn.; Fayette, Mo.; Rochester, N.Y.; Boiling Springs, N.C.;North Canton, Ohio; Lock Haven, Pa.; Bristol, R.I.; Lebanon, Tenn.;Blacksburg, Va.; and Olympia, Wash.College basketball scholarships are possible for players named to the all- American team. The Junior Achievement Golf Sampler Card allows area golfers to drive the fairways at 12 of the local golf courses.

The Golf Sampler Card is $44 and entitles the cardholder to play a total of 61 rounds of golf among the participating courses – Audubon, Bayou Barriere, Colonial, Colonial Acres, Golf Club of New Orleans at Eastover, Ellendale, Lakewood, Oak Harbor, Ormond, Pinewood, Stonebridge and Timberlane. Supporters of the gold card will also receive a complimentaryJunior Achievement golf towel. The card is valid from Jan. 1 through Dec.31, 2001.

Proceeds from the Golf Sampler Card benefit Junior Achievement’s K-12 in-school free enterprise programs. This year alone, Junior Achievementand its 1,000 volunteers will teach more than 30,000 local students in over 160 schools about the relevance of education to the workplace and to prepare them for lifelong learning.

Special Olympics Louisiana’s new “Share the Victory” motor vehicle recycling program allows anyone in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction asthe fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
