LHS’s Williams named to LSWA all-State team

BATON ROUGE – James Williams added another honor for the 2000 Lutcher Bulldogs this past week.

Williams, a senior defensive back, was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A all-state first team. He was honored afterhelping the Bulldogs capture their second straight District 9-3A championship and advance to the regionals for the second straight time.

Williams finished the season with 65 tackles and an area-high nine interceptions. He was also named the defensive MVP of District 9-3A.Lutcher also had three players named to the honorable mention all-State team – defensive lineman Courtney Long, linebacker Lawrence Williams and wide receiver Chris Johnson.

Johnson, the offensive MVP in District 9-3A, gained 1,495 yards in offense this year and scored 12 touchdowns. Long had 116 tackles andseven sacks in also being named first-team all-district as a senior.

Williams, a senior, led the team with 124 tackles. The all-districtselection also had four interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.

District 9-3A runner-up St. James had two players selected to thehonorable mention team – wide receiver Davin Dennis and defensive lineman Shane Kliebert.

Dennis, a senior, had 26 catches for 507 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season in being named to the all-district team. Kliebert was afirst team all-district selection as a senior.

Redemptorist’s Sid Edwards was named the Coach of the Year in Class 3A.

Edwards led the Wolves to a 14-1 record and an appearance in the state championship game. Redemptorist lost to Notre Dame of Crowley in thefinals.

Winnfield senior wide receiver Freddie King was selected as the offensive MVP in Class 3A. King did about everything for Winnfield, rushing for 408yards, catching 29 passes for 565 yards and returning kicks for another 500 yards. He had a total of 15 touchdowns. The defensive MVP in Class 3A was Notre Dame’s senior linebacker Adam Meche. Meche had 79 tackles, seven for losses, and two fumble recoveriesduring the season.

Jena’s Dayne Ashley was the first team quarterback/ In the backfield were Winnfield’s Zan Johnson and Redemptorist’s Shelton Sampson and David Plaisance. Jason Hatcher of Jena was at wide receiver andTeurlings’ Kory Hebert at tight end. St. Louis’ Joel Thibodeaux was thekicker.

On the line was Independence’s Aaron Lips, Parkview Baptist’s Brian Booth, Notre Dame’s Joe Desormeaux, Redemptorist’s Ryan Estevens and West Feliciana’s Williams Parkerson.

Notre Dame’s Aaron Dore, Breaux Bridge’s Mike John, Parkview’s John Majors and Redemptorist’s John Black were on the defensive line. In thelinebacking corps were Breaux Bridge’s Tim Williams, Karr’s Donovan Grayson and Franklinton’s David Garrett. Joining Williams in the secondarywas Bunkie’s Jordan Jackson, Breaux Bridge’s Jessie Daniels and Iowa’s Greg Bellard.

The kick returner was Notre Dame’s Brandon Murrell. Kaplan’s Eric Bradleywas the punter and Westlake’s Zeke Dixon was selected at the athlete position.
