Defense leads Cats past EJ

DESTREHAN – A combination of solid inside play and tough defense spelled a 51-35 victory for Destrehan over East Jefferson in non-district play Monday night.
Destrehan improved to 15-5 overall while East Jefferson fell to 2-13.
Meagan Stock scored a game-high 16 points for the Lady Cats, including three 3-pointers in the first half. Ashley Sentimore added 15 points whileMaren Cameron had five.
East Jefferson was led by Jeantel Haynes with 12 points. Angelle Fuselierhad seven and Kearon Gilbert six.
Stock had a 3-pointer bounce in to give the Lady Cats an 11-4 lead with 3:55 left in the first quarter. Sentimore then scored on a put back, thenbounced in a jumper to make it 15-4 at the 2:56 mark. A jumper by Stockgave the Lady Cats a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Haynes buried two 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 19-12 with 5:57 left in the half. Joevone Markey put back a shot and Cameron buried a 3-pointerfrom the top of the key to build the lead back to 24-12. Haynes hit a 3-pointer from the left side to bring the Lady Warriors to within 24-17 but Stock answered with a 3-pointer from the left wing and two free throws to make it 29-18 at the half.
“Stock hit some good shots from the outside which opened up the inside for us,” Destrehan head coach Ulysses Frontha said. “We played gooddefense and I thought that was the key. We wanted to go at them early andplay tough defense. We got to play everybody. The young kids gotexperience and that was good.”Destrehan continued to pull away as the second half opened. Sentimorescored on a put back, then stole a pass that led to a layup by Quinina Sinceno and a 36-20 lead. A jumper by Sentimore and a layup by IeshaJenkins at the buzzer gave the Lady Cats a 44-25 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Destrehan built a 25-point lead early in the third quarter as Jenkins buried a jumper from the top of the key and Sentimore scored off an inbounds pass by Diondria Washington. Two 3-pointers by Fuselier helpedbring the Lady warriors to within 16 at the end.
