Reed named AP All-American

NEW YORK – The honors keep rolling in for Edward Reed.
The former Destrehan Wildcat star was one of three Miami (Fla.)Hurricanes named to The Associated Press All-America team announced Wednesday. Joining Reed were linebacker Dan Morgan and widereceiver/punt returner Santana Moss.
Reed helped the Hurricanes to an 10-1 record and a number two ranking in 2000. Miami, the Big East champions, will play Florida in the Sugar BowlJan. 2. The Hurricanes are still in the hunt for the national championshippending the outcome of the Orange Bowl between Oklahoma and Florida State the following day.
Reed led the team with eight interceptions. He turned two for touchdowns,including a 44-yard return in the Hurricanes’ 41-21 victory over then-No.
2 Virginia Tech in early November. His other touchdown was a 23-yardreturn in a 45-17 win over Temple.
The junior strong safety was named co-Big East Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Hurricanes to a 26-0 win at Syracuse. Reedintercepted two passes in the game, broke up three passes, made seven tackles, five solo, including two for nine yards in losses.
Reed had been named to the Football Writers Association of America All- American team last month. Before the season, he was among the Hurricanedefensive backfield that was selected the number one secondary in the nation by The Sporting News.
Reed was selected to the Freshman All-American team in 1998 by both the Football News and The Sporting News. He was named to the All-Big Eastsecond team last year.
Reed was an all-State and all-River Parishes selection at defensive back and kick returner as a senior at Destrehan in 1996.
Joining Moss on the first team offense was Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke, the Heisman Trophy winner, running backs Damian Anderson of Northwestern and Ladainian Tomlinson of TCU, wide receivers Antonio Bryant of Pittsburgh and Marvin Minnis of Florida State and tight end Brian Natkin of Texas-El Paso. On the line were Nebraska’s Dominic Raiola,Georgia Tech’s Chris Brown, Texas’ Leonard Davis, Michigan’s Steve Hutchinson and Washington’s Chad Ward. Cincinnati’s Jonathan Ruffin, whokicked for Ridgewood in high school, was the place kicker.
Defensive linemen named were California’s Andre Carter, Texas’ Casey Hampton, Tennessee’s John Henderson and Florida State’s Jamal Reynolds.
Morgan was joined in the linebacking corps by Clemson’s Keith Adams, Oklahoma’s Rocky Calmus and Nebraska’s Carlos Polk. Joining Reed in thesecondary was Wisconsin’s Jamar Fletcher, Akron’s Dwight Smith and Mississippi’s Fred Smoot. California’s Nick Harris was the punter.
