Two-car accident kills one driver, injures five others

GARYVILLE – A Reserve woman died Thursday in a two-vehicle accident on River Road, virtually on the porch of San Francisco Plantation.
Trooper Kevin Cannatella of Louisiana State Police said Betty L. Evans, 52, of166 E. 22nd St., died upon impact when her blue Buick was struck by anoncoming vehicle.
Nekedra A. Wilson, 17, of 12168 Magnolia St., Gramercy, was westbound in apurple 1992 Mazda 929, apparently in excess of the posted 45-mph speed limit.
Cannatella said that at 12:45 p.m., Wilson, traveling alone, apparently lostcontrol of the Mazda, which spun into the oncoming eastbound lane where Evans was traveling with passengers.
Wilson was thrown into her rear seat and later transported to St. JamesParish Hospital to be treated for her injuries. She was later transferred toOur Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, where she was still listed in critical condition as of press time Friday.
The Buick’s front-seat passenger, Stacey A. Turner, 22, of 166 E. 22nd St.,Reserve, was buckled in and sustained injuries. She is listed in stable butserious condition at River Parishes Hospital.
Rear-seat passenger Mary Ann Joseph, 46, of 162 E. 22nd St., Reserve, isalso listed in stable but serious condition following her injuries. JoanneJoseph, 22, of 162 E. 22nd St., Reserve, who was also in the back seat, wasthrown through the front windshield of the Buick and is listed in critical condition. According to Cannatella, neither of the women were buckled in. Lionel Stewart, 10-month old son of Stacey Turner, also in the back seat, was buckled into a carrier but the carrier itself was not properly secured. Asa result the child was injured and was also taken to River Parishes Hospital.
Hospital spokesman Sean Roussel said the child received only minor injuries.
He was listed in stable condition and will be fine, according to Roussel.
The accident remains under investigation, and Cannatella alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the crash. Charges are also pending theinvestigation’s outcome.
