River Parishes athletes collect college awards

NEW ORLEANS – As the regular season winds down, it’s awards time in college football.

And local athletes are among that number.

In Conference USA, Tulane junior punter Casey Roussel, a graduate of St.

Charles Catholic was named to the all-conference first team by the media and the league’s coaches. Roussel’s average of 44.2 yards per punt led theconference and ranked eighth nationally. He had 13 punts downed inside the20-yard line only 26 of his punts were returned. He also had 19 punts of 50or more yards.

The Green Wave’s Roydell Williams, a wide receiver out of East St. John, wasnamed to the conference’s all-freshman team. Williams was fifth on theteam with 26 receptions for 338 yards and two touchdowns.

Also making the all-freshman team was Southern Mississippi’s Kenneth Johnson, a Lutcher graduate. Johnson was named at both wide receiver andreturn specialist. He was third on the team with 27 catches for 311 yardsand a touchdown. He also returned 24 punts for 333 yards. In the Southland Conference, Northwestern State’s T.J. Sutherland, out ofEast St. John, was named to the all-conference second team at widereceiver. Sutherland led the team with 34 catches for 715 yards and sixtouchdowns.

Another East St. John grad, McNeese State’s Bruce Bolden, was named tothe conference’s second team defense at cornerback. Bolden had a team-high three interceptions for 36 yards.
