GRAMERCY – 4-H students from across St. James Parish went to GramercyElementary School recently. This was not a gathering for the weak heartedor the small stomached. This was the St. James Parish 4-H Food Fest.Five different categories lined the tables in the Gramercy Elementary cafeteria. Each category – sugar cookery, seafood, egg, ground beef andpoultry – were further divided up into various styles of dishes.

There was one thing in common with all the prepared foods. All dishes whichwere to be served hot, must first be chilled to refrigerator temperature and brought to the contest on ice. Any dish brought warm was automaticallydisqualified. 4-H never fools around when it comes to safety.Rules at the district level food fest are very strict, including dish temperature as well as allowing only the children to set up their displays. Thestudents at Gramercy Elementary all abided by the rules in order to prepare for the district contest, said Coleen Laiche, home economist at the 4-H St.

James Parish Extension Service.

Judges from local businesses and other friends of the 4-H clubs in the parish took time out of their day for the task of tasting all the dishes. All disheswere judged on taste, appearance, originality and recipe. A first-place winnerwas chosen for each division in each category, then a Food Fest Favorite was chosen to represent each category. From cookie houses decorated in candiesto oyster stuffing to green peppers stuffed with beef, the dishes were extravagant and delicious.

In the end five Food Fest Favorites were chosen. Brandon Keller of VacherieElementary Junior won the egg cookery contest with an Italian Cream Cake.
