Comets third at meet

NEW ORLEANS – Robbie Paydo closed out his prep swimming career withtwo top five finishes, helping St. Charles Catholic tie for third in theDivision III state championships Saturday afternoon at the UNO LakefrontArena Pool.

St. Charles Catholic and Parkview Baptist tied with 197 points each.

Lutcher won its fifth straight state championship with 350 points,followed by E.D. White with 208. St. Louis Catholic was fifth with 187points.

The Comet girls finish seventh with 90 points. Parkview Baptist also wonits fifth straight title, winning every event on its way to 536.5 points.

Sacred Heart of New Orleans was second with 357 points, followed byLutcher with 245. E.D. White came in fourth with 145, followed by St.

Louis Catholic with 140 and Brusly with 121.5.

Paydo was fourth in the 100 backstroke, finishing in one minute, 2.95seconds. Jennings’ Brian Boudreaux was the state champion after touchingthe wall in 55.36. Paydo placed fifth in the 50 freestyle, coming in at 24.72. E.D. White’sColin Ledet won the event in 23.39. The Comets also had three swimmers in the consolations. Shannon Graverwas 11th overall in 25.19. Jeremy Poche was right behind in 25.55 andJosh Ford was next in 25.61.

Paydo also helped the Comets’ 200 freestyle and medley relay teams tothird- and fourth-place finishes, respectively. St. Charles Catholic was in contention throughout both races, taking thelead on the third leg of the freestyle before E.D. White rallied for the win.

The Comets’ team of Paydo, Ford, Poche and Graver finished third in1:41.32, behind the Cardinals (1:40.20) and Lutcher (1:40.69).

The 200 medley relay was in second place throughout the first three legsbefore finishing fourth in 1:53.55. The team of Paydo, Jason Brockman, Graver and Ford finished just behindParkview Baptist which came in at 1:53.33. Lutcher won the title in1:52.44, followed by E.D. White.

After the mid-meet break, Poche swam to a seventh-place finish in the100 butterfly, finishing in 1:12.97. Notre Dame’s Joel Bailey was first in56.99.

Ford added a seventh-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 59.66. Poche was11th overall in 1:01.81. Boudreaux brought the state title home toJennings with a time of 51.22.

Brockman closed out the individual events with a fifth-place finish in the100 breaststroke. The freshman finished in 1:16.54. Bret Deroche wasseventh in 1:16.93 for the Comets. Acuri won the consolation heat in 1:17.92 and placed ninth overall.

Rayville’s Matt Coenen won the state title in 1:01.24.

The 400 freestyle relay team came in sixth in 4:34.82. Parkview was firstin 3:47.06.

In the girls’ competition, Brandi Hoover had the top individual finish forthe Lady Comets, placing sixth in the 100 breaststroke. The freshmancame in at 1:20.09. Parkview’s Helen Mason and Brusly’s Brittany Albareztied for the state title in 1:14.19. The Lady Comets’ 200 medley relay team was sixth in 2:22.07. Parkviewran away with the event, finishing in 1:59.29. Sacred Heart was second in2:03.47.

Hoover was 13th overall with a time of 2:15.58 in the consolations of the200 individual medley. Parkview’s Mason was the state winner in 2:21.58. Brooke Tillman added a 16th place finish in the 50, finishing in 31.06.

Parkview’s Michaelyn Hernandez was first in 25.59. The Lady Comets were in sixth place after eight events with 39 points.

Tillman was 15th in the 100 freestyle, coming in at 1:09.35. Parkview’sHernandez won her second event in 56.16.

The 200 freestyle relay team was ninth overall in 2:04.92. Parkview wasfirst in 1:45.45. The 400 freestyle team closed out the meet with a sixth-place finish of 4:58.18. Parkview closed out its sweep with a time of3:47.06.
