Evangel holds off Destrehan in bi-district

SHREVEPORT – The Evangel Christian Academy Eagles clawed the Destrehan Fighting Wildcats right out of the state football playoffs, as Evangel won 28- 23.
Next week, Evangel (9-2) plays Comeaux in the regionals. Comeaux upset St.Amant, 35-28, Friday night.
Destrehan finished its season at 8-3.
“Those kids played hard,” Evangel coach Dennis Dunn admitted. “We wereinside the 10-yard line twice in the first half and got pushed out. We shouldhave put them away.”Evangel first scored on a one-yard run to take the early lead, but a 27-yard reception by Jake Smith helped the Wildcats rebound.
Another Evangel score on a six-yard pass reception pushed them out in the lead, and a safety scored when Randy Roth was nailed in the end zone helped the Eagles’ cause.
Jonathan Scifres boosted the Wildcats with a 27-yard field goal to help revive the Destrehan hopes going into the halftime break.
Helping that revival as well was a 99-yard kickoff runback for a Destrehan touchdown by Smith. Evangel returned with a four-yard scoring run andDestrehan tried once more when Roth connected to Ryan Jones for a score.
However, with 1:12 remaining in the game, Evangel scooted to the win on a one-yard scoring run.
Evangel led 27-12 on first downs and had 87 offensive plays, to Destrehan’s 34 offensive plays.
Evangel led on passing, 18 of 32 for 225 yards. Destrehan had 13 of 20 for173 yards. However, the Wildcats’ rushing game was virtually shut down,with the Eagles rushing for 234 yards, compared to the Wildcats’ 33 yards.
Destrehan, though, consoled themselves with only five penalties for a loss of 30 yards, compared to Evangel’s 13 penalties for a loss of 115 yards.
