Playoffs familiar to locals

LAPLACE – Come November, many types of birds migrate to their winter homes in the south.
Around that same time, five River Parishes volleyball teams flock to their home away from home – the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
Hahnville, Destrehan, St. Charles Catholic, Riverside and Reserve Christianare all making repeat appearances in the tournament. Hahnville has thelongest streak of tournament appearances with six. St. Charles Catholic isnext with five straight appearances. Riverside is making its fourth straighttrip to the Pontchartrain Center. Reserve Christian has made thetournament all three years it has been in the LHSAA while Destrehan is making its second straight trip.
Hahnville (22-10) enters the tournament as the District 9-I champion after defeating Destrehan in a tiebreaker playoff Thursday afternoon. The LadyTigers will play Dominican, the District 14-I runner-up, in the Division I bi- district playoffs today at 8:15 p.m. The winner of that game will play thewinner of East Jefferson and Abramson in the regionals Thursday at 7 p.m.Hahnville has made the regionals each of the past two years.
Destrehan (8-16) is the second-place team in District 9-I. The Lady Cats,who advanced to the regionals last year, play District 12-I champion Warren Easton in the bi-district playoffs today at 2 p.m. The winner of that gametakes on the winner of Covington and Mt. Carmel tomorrow at 8:15 p.m.St. Charles Catholic has reached the semifinals three straight years, losingto the eventual state champion each time. The Lady Comets (15-22) enter this year’s tournament as the second place team in District 6-III behind E.D. White. St. Charles Catholic plays Brusly, the District 4-III champion,tomorrow in the Division III bi-district playoffs at 11:30 a.m. The winner willplay the winner of Landry and Breaux Bridge Friday at 8 a.m. in thequarterfinals.
Riverside (9-7) continued its string of tournament appearances this year under first-year coaches Toni Miano and Bridget Sinibaldi. The Rebels are thesecond place team in District 6-IV after losing out to Ridgewood Thursday.
Riverside plays Westminster Christian, the District 2-IV champion and the state runner-up last year, in the Division IV bi-district playoffs today at 3:15 p.m. The winner advances to play Newman, the defending Division IV state champion, in the quarterfinals Thursday at 5:45 p.m. The Greenies received abye in the first round after winning the District 7-IV championship.
Reserve Christian (10-8) looks to continue its climb in the state playoffs after reaching the second round in 1999. The Lady Eagles swept FaithChristian to capture the District 8-V championship this year.
Reserve Christian will play White Castle, the District 2-V runner-up, in the Division V bi-district playoffs today at 12:45 p.m. The winner will meet the winner of Delcambre-Northlake Christian in the quarterfinals Thursday at 12:45 p.m.
