Riverside romps by Gators

RESERVE – After running over the Fisher Gators, 48-7, Friday night, the Riverside Rebels end the 2000 football season undefeated and District 9-2A champions. The 10-0 Rebels go into the play-offs next week with home fieldadvantage.

Riverside improved to 6-0 in District 9-2A. Fisher fell to 1-9 overall and 0-6in district.

Friday night’s game was so lopsided that Fisher was in negative yard territory until the third quarter when they managed to score their only touchdown of the evening.

The absence of their injured star running back, Britt Waguespack, did not slow down the Rebels’ running game at all. They had 329 rushing yards forthe night. Neil Richard took over the running back position and led the teamwith 124 yards including an 81-yard touchdown. Brandon Delaneuville alsomade a name for himself by rushing 95 yards. The Gators could only managea total of 68 rushing yards, the longest being a 62-yard touchdown by Scott Blanda.

The Rebels also dominated in the air. Because of the high score, CoachMickey Roussel put in three different quarterbacks throughout the game, and each one of them threw at least one touchdown. Damien Melancon led thepassing with 88 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Schoen and ScottPoirrier each threw for one touchdown and the Rebels had a total of 136 yards in the air as compared to Fisher whose quarterback, Keenon Leblanc had one completion in10 attempts for 10 yards.

As for total yardage, the Rebels out-distanced the Gators by a whopping 519 yards to 78 yards.

The only Gator player who was able to get a lot of playing time was the punter, Pio Bourgeois, who was forced to punt seven times during the game.

The tone of the game was set in the first quarter when the Rebel running back ran 54 yards for the first Riverside score during the second play of the game.

The Rebels managed to score four touchdowns in the first quarter, two in the second quarter and one in the fourth. Fisher managed one touchdownduring the second play of the third quarter.

Next week, the Rebels are projected to play University in the Class 2A bi- district playoffs.

As the Riverside scorekeeper commented at the end of Friday night’s blow- out, “Now the real season begins.”
