Port picks operators for Globalplex facility

RESERVE – The Port of South Louisiana has picked Stevedoring Services of America and Associated Terminals as joint operators of its general cargo dock and the Globalplex facility.
Port Executive Director Joseph Accardo Jr. said he is “confident the portand the stevedoring companies will quickly conclude an agreement which will allow the recently-expanded dock to begin full operations as early as November 2000.”Stevedoring Services of America handles cargo at 150 sites worldwide, including along the Gulf Coast, West Coast and East Coast of the United States. One of the largest independent terminal operators in the world,SSA handles every type of cargo.
Associated Terminals, headquartered in Reserve, provides cargo trans- loading services along the lower Mississippi River. The work force of morethan 60 handled more than five million tons of cargo at facilities in the Port of South Louisiana alone in the past year.
Recently, Associated Terminals acquired warehouses in LaPlace, completing a major expansion to its headquarters and expanded its fleet of mid-stream stevedoring rigs from three to five.
Accardo added he felt the companies’ experience and reputation “will result in an efficient and profitable operations at the Globalplex intermodal dock and terminal.”
